The Secret of Being Content - Devotion of the WCEU Newsletter 2013/3
"I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, ..".from Phil 4:11-13
Being content is a great mystery for most of us. Something that seems to always allude us. Paul wrote, the secret of being content can be learned, one can experience it (know), and it is a divine strength that naturally results by implementing what we know about living with God (v8 and v9) and rejoicing in Him.
How can we learn to be content in our situation? Most effective learning happens when we have a great and dedicated teacher-mentor. Paul learned from the Master Jesus, on land and at sea, in freedom and captivity. When we are in a desperate need to learn this secret we have to seek the same Mentor. His school is always open!
Paul learned to be an 'overcomer'; a person who knows by experience, how to perceive and how to react to adverse situations and circumstances. He lived through various circumstances being confident of the constant presence of his Master. This is a part of the secret we would like to know as well.
The sure experience of the constant presence of Christ, who suffered for us and was glorified by the Father, empowered the apostle to be content. He lived and experienced the word of Jesus: "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matt. 6:33). As a disciple being in Christ we are safe from sorrows about our daily needs and from getting lost in having plenty.
